Since 1946, the Sytsma family had been connecting with farmers to provide families with high quality meats. But as they saw it, the world of farming was changing and not for the better. American families no longer had any idea where their meat was being raised and the nation’s farmers were being pushed out of sustainable practices by industrialization.
As more and more middlemen added cost and reduced value, they realized something had to change.
Cue the napkin-sketch idea that started to sound more realistic than the Sytsma's originally thought. What if they could partner with local, sustainable farmers, and deliver meat directly to customer's doorsteps? What if they could share high-quality, nutritious products using technology as the catalyst?
Believing in what the Sytsma's wanted to do, we rallied around that napkin and set three teams into motion to help realize this vision:
Our strategy team helped define the initial business economics like price, margin, inventory, capital investment and brand. Our design team translated the message and user journeys into an unique web and mobile experience that told the story and simplified the purchase. Our ecommerce development team developed a highly tuned goLang business application to seamlessly connect the customer experience to the shipping and fulfillment system.
One of the key elements behind the Harvestbox innovation story is a powerful ecommerce engine built in Google’s open source Go language (golang). This technology was chosen because the experience team had identified that the Harvestbox customer was highly mobile and demanded fast interactions. Another key element was that the customer team was not comprised of ‘ecommerce experts’ but ‘sustainable meat experts’.
At the end of the day, this ecommerce solution was all about bringing families and friends together to share a delicious meal with peace of mind knowing it was raised by farmers that respect their animals, preserve their land, and believe in leaving the world a better place for the next generation.
The value of HarvestBox products lie in the story behind them. Potential customers are able to learn about the farmers that raised the animals by watching bio videos, reading about the family farmers, and even send a message to any of the farmers before placing their first HarvestBox order. Don't just take our word for it, check out this Grass-fed Beef Bundle provided by Seven Sons Family farm and be sure to watch their inspiring story.
The HarvestBox experience is fully responsive. We made sure people could order a HarvestBox bundle, anytime, anywhere using their smartphones and even tablets. Mobile-friendly promotions and products can easily be managed through the custom CMS we developed using goLang.
We set up shipping integrations to create a smooth, reliable fulfillment process. Shipping confirmations for both the customer and for HarvestBox employees were put in place to ensure all important communications were sent to the right people reliably and efficiently. Each product bundle is packaged with dry ice giving it a limited window for delivery so communication is key.
