Agentic Commerce on Shopify: What Retailers Need to Know Now
AI is rapidly changing how customers discover and purchase products. Instead of browsing websites, shoppers can now ask AI assistants like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Microsoft Copilot for recommendations and complete checkout instantly within the conversation.
Shopify is enabling this shift through agentic commerce, or Shopify agentic storefronts, allowing retailers to sell directly inside AI platforms. This creates an entirely new sales channel alongside your website, retail stores, marketplaces, and Shop app.
Purchases attributed to AI-powered search have already increased 11x, and traffic from AI sources continues to accelerate across Shopify merchants.
For retailers on Shopify, this represents a fundamental shift in how commerce works.
Why Agentic Commerce Matters: AI is Becoming Its Own Channel
Previously, the commerce journey followed a predictable path:
Google Search → Your Website → Checkout
Now, AI assistants are inserting themselves between discovery and transaction:
AI Assistant → Checkout → Order in Shopify
Customers no longer need to visit your website to complete a purchase. Your product catalog, checkout, and commerce infrastructure must now be accessible directly to AI platforms. Your website is no longer the only entry point – it is one of many.
Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts: Where AI Transactions Happen
Shopify now allows merchants to enable agentic storefronts, which connect your products directly to AI platforms like:
ChatGPT
Google AI Mode and Gemini
Microsoft Copilot
These platforms can discover your products via Shopify’s catalog, display real-time pricing and availability, complete checkout using Shopify’s secure infrastructure, and automatically send orders into Shopify Admin for fulfillment.
This turns AI platforms into fully functional sales channels powered by Shopify.
Comparison: Shopify Agentic Commerce Channels
Not all AI channels function the same way. There are key differences in fees, checkout infrastructure, and requirements. In all of these channels, Shopify manages checkout, order processing, and catalog synchronization across all platforms. Orders appear in your Shopify Admin like any other sales channel.
Channel | Where Customers Buy | Checkout Infrastructure | Fees | Payment Requirements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Google AI Mode & Gemini | Google AI search and Gemini | Shopify checkout via Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) | No additional fees | Works with any payment processor |
Microsoft Copilot | Copilot AI chat | Shopify Checkout Kit embedded checkout | No addition fees | Works with any payment processor |
ChatGPT | ChatGPT web and mobile | Shopify checkout integration | 4% transaction fee after 30-day free trial | Requires Shopify Payments |
How Shopify Retailers Should Prepare Now
Agentic commerce relies heavily on structured product data and brand knowledge. Shopify has provided clear guidance on how retailers can prepare.
1. Ensure You Meet the Requirements for Shopify Agentic Storefronts
To be eligible for agentic storefronts, your Shopify store must meet the following requirements:
- Your store must be based in the United States, selling to customers based in the United States.
- Your products must be eligible for inclusion in the Shopify Catalog.
- You must read and agree to the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
- You must have store policies such as terms of service added to your store.
- You can’t require customers to log in to a customer account before checking out.
2. Install Shopify’s Knowledge Base App
Shopify recommends installing its Knowledge Base app to provide AI agents with structured brand and policy information. You can use your current FAQ and Brand information in this app. This app is only visible to AI agents, and not on the front-end of your website.
This helps AI agents answer questions about:
Return policies
Shipping information
Product details
Brand information and FAQs
3. Optimize Your Product Catalog for AI
AI agents rely on structured and descriptive product data. Shopify recommends optimizing:
Product titles
Product descriptions
Product categories
Product metafields
Retailers can also create AI-specific product titles and descriptions without impacting the website experience.
4. Enable Agentic Storefront Channels in Shopify
Agentic storefronts can be enabled directly in Shopify Admin under Sales Channels. Go to Settings -> Sales Channels and look for “Agentic Storefronts.” If you do not see this currently, Shopify is still rolling out functionality. To be sure you get alerted when it becomes available, sign up at https://www.shopify.com/chatgpt.
Once enabled, your products can be discovered and purchased directly within AI platforms. If you choose not to appear on a specific AI tool, just toggle off the switch. It is important that #3 is completed first, as your Shopify Catalog will feed directly to the AIs that you opt-in to allow for instant checkout.
Orders flow seamlessly into Shopify alongside ecommerce, POS, and marketplace orders.
The Future of Commerce Runs Through Shopify
Agentic commerce represents the next evolution of unified commerce. Your Shopify store is no longer just a destination—it is the infrastructure powering transactions across AI platforms.
Retailers who prepare now will gain early visibility, access to new customers, and a competitive advantage as AI becomes a primary commerce channel.
Shopify has built the foundation. The next step is ensuring your store is ready.
Shopify’s Agentic Plan: AI Commerce for Non-Shopify Brands
Shopify has also introduced a new Agentic Plan that allows brands not currently on Shopify to participate in AI commerce.
With this plan, brands can:
Upload products to Shopify’s global catalog
Make products discoverable across ChatGPT, Google, Copilot, and future AI platforms
Enable secure checkout powered by Shopify
Syndicate product data once instead of managing multiple integrations

Bonus: ChatGPT Ads
Did you see that ChatGPT is rolling out ads in “sponsored” sections at the bottom of ChatGPT response. Currently, this is being tested in the United States only, and only for the Free and Go plans.
Ads will appear based on the topic of the conversation, past chats, and interaction with previous ads.
